Peter A. Moustakis, Esq. Is Speaking at Three Upcoming Events on Guardianship, Trusts, and Special Needs Planning

Quick Summary

Peter A. Moustakis, Esq. of Sowerby & Moustakis Law, PLLC will be speaking at three events in 2026 covering guardianship and conservatorship, trust law, and estate planning for families of children with special needs. Two of the events are free virtual workshops open to the public. One is a full-day professional seminar for attorneys, accountants, and trust professionals. This post shares what each event covers, who it is designed for, and how to register.

This summer and fall, Peter A. Moustakis, Esq. will be presenting at three separate events focused on some of the most consequential decisions families and legal professionals face: how to protect a loved one who cannot protect themselves, how trusts actually work, and what estate planning looks like when a family member has special needs.

The topics are not abstract. They come up in the real conversations Peter has with clients who are trying to plan ahead and are not sure where to start.

Below is what each event covers and what you should know if you want to attend.

Event One: Guardianship and Conservatorship Planning

Financial Planning & Wellness Workshop Series

June 16, 2026 | 5:30 PM | Virtual via Zoom

Many families do not understand the difference between guardianship and conservatorship until they are already in a situation where the distinction matters.

Both are legal tools designed to protect someone who cannot make fully independent decisions for themselves. But they serve different functions, and the responsibilities that come with each are not the same.

Guardianship generally involves decisions about a person’s care, living situation, and medical needs. Conservatorship generally involves managing finances and property. Some families need one. Some need both. Many do not fully realize what they are agreeing to when they pursue either option.

This workshop, presented by The Moody Street Group as part of a five-part Financial Planning and Wellness series, is designed for families who are planning for the future of a child or adult with special needs. Peter will serve as the keynote speaker.

The session is free and takes place over Zoom.

To register: Contact your family navigator by phone, text, or email. Questions can be directed to Program Supervisor Aj Martinez at (413) 463-0719 or BMARTINEZ@NEWNORTHCC.ORG.

Event Two: Trusts From Start to Finish

NBI Seminar

June 29, 2026 | 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM EDT

This is a full-day professional seminar hosted by the National Business Institute, designed for attorneys, accountants, tax professionals, trust officers, and paralegals.

Trusts are one of the most versatile tools in estate planning. They can reduce probate exposure, provide long-term management for beneficiaries who are not ready to receive assets outright, protect a family member with special needs, and help reduce tax liability. But they can also be misused, poorly drafted, or funded incorrectly, which means they fail to do exactly what the family expected.

The course covers the full picture:

– Trust basics: key parties, terms, and a current legislative update

– The trust lifecycle from creation through termination

– Revocable living trusts: drafting, operation, and termination

– How to use trusts to reduce taxes effectively

– Grantor trusts and how they work

– Special needs trusts and who qualifies as a beneficiary

– Ethical considerations in trust work

Peter’s role at this seminar reflects the depth of his background in trust drafting and estate planning strategy. For legal and financial professionals looking to build a stronger foundation in trust law, this is a substantive full-day program.

Event Three: Navigating Wills and Trusts

Financial Planning & Wellness Workshop Series

September 24, 2026 | 5:30 PM | Virtual via Zoom

Peter will return to The Moody Street Group’s Financial Planning and Wellness workshop series in September for a session focused on wills, trusts, and the estate planning tools that help families plan for the long term.

This is a topic that creates a lot of confusion. Many people have heard of both documents but are not sure how they work together, which one they actually need, or what happens if neither is in place.

For families with a child who has special needs, the stakes are particularly high. The structure of a trust matters. The language used when naming beneficiaries matters. Decisions made now can affect government benefit eligibility later, which is a mistake that is very difficult to undo after the fact.

This session is free, open to the public, and takes place virtually.

To register: Contact your family navigator by phone, text, or email. Questions can be directed to Program Supervisor Aj Martinez at (413) 463-0719 or BMARTINEZ@NEWNORTHCC.ORG.

Why These Topics Are Worth Taking Seriously Now

Guardianship, conservatorship, and trusts are not topics most people think about until there is a reason to. When that reason arrives, it usually comes with a deadline.

A family navigating a transition for a child with special needs, a parent approaching the age where incapacity becomes a real concern, or a professional trying to understand how to advise clients on complex trust structures, all of them benefit from having a clearer picture before they need to act on it.

These events offer that chance.
